Many inhabitants of the insect world are classed as holometabolous, spending a transformational part of their life inside a robust, yet intricate and protective cocoon or chrysalis. Here they are nurtured and grow to maturity eventually emerging as imago or fully developed individuals having undergone a metamorphosis or remarkable change during which they develop wings with which to launch themselves into the next phase of their life. Students of the Jewellery and Object (J+O) Studio liken the time they spend at Sydney College of the Arts (SCA) to the period of time holometabolous insects spend in their chrysalis, undergoing remarkable and transformative changes in their artistic practice in an environment where they are able to develop and explore their ideas, interests and abilities. Following graduation the students emerge and fly freely into the next phase of their artistic career. Chrysalis is an exhibition of works by 24 artists from the Jewellery and Object (J+O) Studio of Sydney College of the Arts of all ages and from all walks of life. It includes the work of past and present undergraduate and postgraduate students at various levels of development in their career. Each artist has a distinct practice, point of view, and way of working. They embrace material experimentation, conceptual development and personal expression which is part of the framework of contemporary jewellery and object making encouraged in the J+O studio. Curated by current Masters of Fine Art candidate Angela Porritt and Graduating Honours student Clare Hooper, Chrysalis showcases the diversity of work created by artists from the J+O Studio of SCA. Just as chrysalises take many forms so too does the work of the artists in this exhibition. Each artist has or will eventually emerge from his or her own personal chrysalis, defined by the experiences they have encountered and growth they have undertaken whilst at the college. Each will emerge having developed their own unique identity and way of working, will unfold their wings and fly into the next stage of their artistic career.
